‘Korean beauty’ (해외 문화홍보원 주관 / 문화체육부 / 안그라픽스)
Hong Ji-yoon was born in Seoul and graduated with a degree in Oriental painting from Hongik University. She mainly produces paintings that use traditional Oriental techniques in a contemporary way, along with video installations that extend these paintings. Hong ultimately considers her work to be a form of poetry, and she aims to include poetry, calligraphy, and painting within each work while making free use of materials like Korean paper, writing brushes, and ink. Her works are characterized by their large scale, covering whole walls of the exhibition hall, and their bright fluorescent colors. The colored strip es that appear ill these works seems to represent Korea's traditional "five directional colors," and they show a superb contemporary sense of color that today's digital media cannot match. Her pictures of flowers, in particular, use the traditional technique of painting without drawing an outline, and the flower shapes and poetic texts harmonize with the vertical or horizontal stripes of color to create a vibrant and decorative effect. The large and small pieces of Korean writing and characters inserted among these shapes add to the brilliance of the whole work while heightening the poetic flavor.
