Villa Waldberta
House of artists
of the City of Munich

Villa Waldberta in Feldafing at Lake Starnberg is the international writers’ and artists’ residence of the City of Munich in the responsibility of the City of Munich Culture Relation Office.
The villa is situated on the hillside, overlooks the lake and and has an extraordinary view on the Bavarian Alps. Built in 1902, the villa is surrounded by its own large wooded gardens. Feldafing is a small town approx. 30 km south of Munich and can be reached easily by public transport.
There are five furnished apartments of different sizes in the villa to accommodate authors and artists, thereby offering retreat as well as the possibility of intensive work. Each apartment is equipped with a kitchen and guests cater for their own meals. All guests are provided with free accommodation and a monthly allowance of € 1000,-. Four scholarships are placed in the field of literature and one in visual arts (the Villa has only one studio for artists and a fotostudio). The applicant must be domiciled outside Bavaria.
The invitation to Villa Waldberta is in general not available through application, but through recommendation submitted by personalities and institutions of the public literary scene and art world in Munich. Residencies are then awarded by the City of Munich Culture Relation Office in cooperation with an advisory commission (literature) and a jury (visual arts).
The criteria for the award to authors, translators and sometimes scientists are normally based on a project which is to be realized in cooperation with a Munich institution (publisher, radio, university, etc.) or with a Munich writer, resp. translator. The subject treated can be related to the Munich Spring Book Week and in exchange with Munich´s twin cities or other cities. In the field if visual arts, as well, a reference to Munich (gallery, exhibition in a Munich institution, exchange project) is generally required as a basis for the residency.
Moreover, Villa Waldberta is considered as an institution for prosecuted authors and artists offering asylum to them for the period of the scholarship. Also a problematic social situation can influence the decisionof the juries.
